Westgate
Nestled in the heart of the Hilltop area of Columbus, Westgate is one of the city’s most stable, picturesque and affordable historic neighborhoods.
Westgate’s development began in the 1920s on land that had been home to Camp Chase, a Civil War training ground for Union soldiers and a prison for Confederate captives. More than 2,000 of the prisoners who died at Camp Chase are buried in a cemetery maintained by the federal government and open to the public on the neighborhood’s southern edge.
Located four miles west of downtown, the neighborhood also is home to Westgate Park and Recreation Center, the Hilltop branch of the Columbus Public Library, West High School, Westgate Alternative Elementary School and St. Mary Magdalene Church and School.
About 4,500 residents live in 2,100 households within the Westgate boundaries of W. Broad Street, Hague Avenue, Sullivant Avenue and Demorest Road.
In early 2008, a group of homeowners created the Westgate Neighbors Association, a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enhancing one of the city’s most significant residential assets.
